Since 10 October 2025, Italy has been the first EU member state with a comprehensive national law on artificial intelligence in force. Law 132/2025, published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale on 25 September 2025, does not replace the EU AI Act. It fills the spaces the European regulation leaves to national legislators: who supervises AI in Italy, how it may be used in healthcare, employment, public administration and courts, what happens to copyright when a work is produced with AI, and which new criminal offenses punish malicious deepfakes.
