The AI feature was a pricing decision | Kevin Escoda

Assistants and copilots arrived in products nobody asked for. Almost nobody uses them. They worked anyway, because their job was to move the price.

There is a version of Microsoft Office that Microsoft will not sell you. It is supported, it runs the same Word and the same Excel, and the only route to it starts with the cancel button. Microsoft's own support page sets out the steps without embarrassment. To move to a plan with fewer features, it says, "you must cancel your existing subscription and then buy another subscription". Sign in, find the subscription, select Manage, then Cancel subscription. And then: "The Cancel page will show you the features of your current subscription plan. If you're switching to another plan with fewer features, select the plan that works for you." Two of the plans waiting on the other side of that page are called Microsoft 365 Personal Classic and Microsoft 365 Family Classic. What makes them classic is that Copilot is not in them.
